TIVO

Tivo, a PVR (Personal Video Recorder). This is everything you would like your VCR to be and then some. Tivo records onto a hard disk. It lets you watch something previously recorded while recording something else. You can pause, fast forward and rewind as you watch. Its guide let you record TV programs anytime they are on instead of recording by time.

When you watch live TV, you can pause when the phone rings or other interuptions occur, then just press go to watch where you left off. Tivo runs a 30 minute 'live TV' buffer for this. Go to their site for more details. It will change your relationship to TV.

When I updated this page last, in Sept of 2000, I mentioned that we'd gotten a second unit to increase recording time and allow for recording conflicts.

Well today I have three units, two stand-alone (SA) units tied to to the cable system and one unit tied to the DirecTV satelite. The DirecTV Tivo has two tuners allowing to record two different channels at the same time. So now I can record four different programs at the same time.

Additionally we've replaced the original two Tivo's with newer Tivo Series 2 units, a 60 hr unit and a 80 hr unit. This nets out to about 30+ and 40+ hours of recording time. Add this to the 35 hr recording time for the DirecTV Tivo and we have total 105+ hours of recording time.

To round out everything I've added a Panasonic DVD recorder to the AV mix. This allows me to archive recordings from the Tivo's. See link for more info.
